Back in June, I eagerly awaited the blooming of a 25ft agave that grows near my house. It seems this particular species only blooms once and then the plant dies. From what I understand, this particular plant was many years old. I knew I would only get one crack at it.

The following are just a few of many taken while hanging with one hand off a 25ft A frame ladder and trying to time my photos with the swaying of the stalk. It was early morning and there was a slight breeze causing the entire stalk to sway a foot in either direction. Initially, my intention was to photograph the opening of the buds over several days. Little did I imagine the multitude of critters that called this highrise home. The bees went crazy over this stuff, but it was the contrast in color of the ladybugs against the yellow background that caught my eye. While there were literally dozens scurrying over and through the stamens, one pair in particular caught my eye, thus, the title of this story. If you look carefully, just in front of the female ladybug is a very small aphid. I can only image what must have be going through his mind as he played peeping Tom. This pair of ladybugs remained couple for more than 20 minutes. If not for the fact that my hand clinging to the ladder became exhausted, I would have stayed much longer.

Look at the aphid hiding to the right.
