My photo buddy Susan called the other day and said she wanted to photograph a friends daughter using indirect window light. She asked if I would help her with settings, reflectors, and posing. This young lady was fun and very at ease around us old folks. We all had fun and everyone liked the photos.
I like what you did with the light and the pose is excellent, nicely focused. Next time have her fix her hair and a hint of smile would be nice, other than that it's a good shot.

Thanks for looking. We had her undo her braids and no comb in sight. We will work on the smile.
Personally I like her expression and her hair seems to fit the mood. I would like her eyes more forward so the whites aren’t quite as prominent. Overall a very nice portrait.

Thanks Bill, I think I will be posting more of her in the future.
The look is not openly trusting. Everything about any subject you photograph can tell you something about the person you photograph, what they were thinking, what they were questioning, what they wanted/hoped would happen or what they feared might happen. This and more.... Examine your posed photos. Most are not a simple smile or a blank personality looking at you. A person is there, even if 2 or 3 years old. And more complex as they get older.
You might even ask them what they were thinking of at the time and show them the picture. Learn from your 'subjects' and grow. This is one of the ways that the great photographers of 'personalities' learn from their subjects. And they take these ideas/experiences to other subjects, other photos.
