It's been so many years since I visited I don't have any specific recommendations, but might check out this thread:

Get there early enough and do it all - walk the wildlife loop/marsh trail, drive the beach access trail to the ocean, woodland and bivalve trails - that's pretty much it. Easy enough to do it in one day.

Been years since I was there too. Used to go when I lived in VA and my sig. other was a librarian at JMU. IIRC, there were wild horses there (or am I confused again?) Harry
