Those falling flower formations from sweetgum trees are the male (staminate) flowers.
Interesting. I have never encountered them but do they fall in large pieces like that? I know the garbage that falls from my oak trees and covers everything is the pollen producing part of the cycle.

Nicely taken. The Sweet Gum seed pods that fall to the ground make fascinating subjects and they are quite painful when stepped on.
