Charlotte, your days are numbered.
Found this in the garden yesterday. I believe it is a Banded Garden Orbweaver (Argiope trifasciata) The information I found says they are gone after the first frost. We have already had several frosts and even some snow. She's a hardy one. The span of her legs is slightly bigger than a quarter but smaller than a half dollar. She has a beautiful web but very few guests. Only one small visitor. Notice she is extruding silk from her spinnerets in a few of the photos.
I appreciate your back-lighted images. We do not see too many Banded Orbweavers in Southern California, nor do we get much frost in the L.A. basin.
What is your macro set-up?
Thank you, Sensei! I am shooting a D7000 w/ a Tamron 90, handheld at 1/250. The ISO varied on this shoot from 400-800. I did use some off-camera fill flash (SB-800 @ 1/8 power) to help separate the background from the main subject.

Take a look at several macro set-ups in
http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-32754-1.html . I want you to consider a camera-mounted macro illumination source. You can easily add a $30 O-Flash attachment to your SB-800.
With much appreciation. I will check this out. An O-flash is on my wish list.
