I'm not sure this is in the right section, but I really need some help here. I took this photo of my great grandaughter recently. I don't see them very often and usually 'on the fly' so didn't have time to really compose a shot. So, what I would like to do is get suggestions on a good background to use and hopefully I can use PE 10 to select her and move it to a nice background. My question, what would you suggest? I really can't come up with a good idea. Either scenic or plain. Please feel free to experiment with this. Maybe then an idea will click in my old brain. Thanks a lot.

Well, what you have is a "snapshot"... Basically nothing to brag about...

You are going to HAVE to take time to set up a composition... If you had her move to her left, then you would have had a nice greed carpet for a background... Then if you had her lift her head, a good shot would have come to place... Your setting were good..

Yes, Donrent, I agree with you completely but asking that young one to pose for you is just asking for a foolish grin or worse. I realize the rule of thirds is broken here but with a good background from another photo I hoped to use PE 10 to move her entirely to the proper composition over the new background. Of course, nothing I can do about the tilted head. I think that is her idea of a provocative look.

One reason I upgraded to PSE 10 was the ability to use the DOF adjustment. Can't do with my camera.
I've tried it with a few shots and it works. There is a lot of work cleaning up the edges to make it look right. I suppose you would have the same edge cleaning problem with moving her to another background. So I would just mover her over to the grass, it would match edges that way. Than blur the background and perhaps crop out some or all of the jeep.

Not very good - five minutes in Elements - do something like this properly and then you can drop your poser into any background. Just cut out into a transparent background then experiment with pasting the image into any pictures you have.

Clone the lawn all around her. Not the best, but the quickest. Then crop to put her on right bottom "rule of thirds" crosspoint.

I was reading an article recently about a professional sports photographer who picks out his backgrounds before the game starts. Then he positions himself in the correct spot to utilize those backgrounds, waiting for the action to fill the middle and foreground.

You can do something similar and previsualize your backgrounds now, shoot test shots and then when your GGD comes around, place yourself in those pretested spots and shoot away. You will have upgraded your background and can concentrate on what your GGD is doing and capture it.

Also, you might think about sitting down or somehow lowering yourself so you are shooting her at her level instead of down on her.

Hi Captn Jack, your GGD has same cheeky/suprised look that my girls had at that age! I thought that she'd do well in the jungle or being inspected by one of my cattle.

Get away from my goodies!
Get away from my goodies!...

EEEK!!!!

VERY GOOD REPLY. Donrent should have anwered the question as you did showing what can be done with the photo rather than being condescending with his reply. As for the child's candid pose I think it is adorable and very natural looking. I myself take many snap shots of my grandchildren at play and am more interested in capturing the moment rather than worrying about composition. I can deal with that P/P as you have shown in your examples. Thumbs up to your response.

You got some good advise here. I am not good at all in PP. The only thing I can add Is get lower when you shoot kids.:)

She looks like a wildflower kind of girl. Maybe a field of flowers or a sandy beach with the sea behind her.
