My Grandparent's farm had two cisterns filled by a water truck from town. So to save water the old outhouse was still used most of the time to save water right up to when Grandma sold the farm while I was in Nam in the mid 60's. Showers were also military style (get wet, water off, soap-shampoo and lather, water on-rinse) and lasted 5-10 mins total. And that indoor plumbing was added to the house in the mid 50's. The house, with several remodels and rebuilds still had some beams and things from the original built before the Civil War to replace the cabin built in the 1790s(and the house had used beams cut from the original cabin logs).

My house was originally built in 1863 but was extensively updated beginning around 2000. There are substantial additions and improvements. There are beams from the original house.
