Firmware version 1.3.1 and 1.0.9 - i currently have 1.2.0 and 1.0.7 on my R5 body and RF 100-500 lens. What improvements do others who have upgraded to latest version firmware 1.3.1 and 1.0.9 see as far as autofocus improvements ? I shoot primarily birds. Thanks

1.3.1 adds quite a list of minor fixes/improvements as well as the fixes/improvements of 1.3.0. If you go to the support section of usa.canon.com and look up each update there is the option to pull up a complete listing of the changes the updates make. I have updated my R5 to 1.3.1 and have seen absolutely no problems with it.

I'd be very careful, even firmware version 1.3.1 may lock up the R5.

I will not update the R6 and I shoot primarily birds and wildlife.

Take care,

One note, the YouTuber was using an external power supply during the update. Not something most people do and that could be the cause of the lock up, as he speculated. He removed the external supply, re-inserted it, and the problem went away. Removing the standard battery and re-inserting it is a common problem shooting solution for any camera. No different then shutting down and then re-booting a computer to solve an issue. It's hard to say just what caused the lock up but it appears to be a minor issue. One of those remarking on his statement said that hitting the 'Set' button cured his lock up. It appeared to him that the update program had not stopped running and hitting 'Set' shut it down.
Whatever the reason, the problem does not appear to be widespread and if it does occur it is easily rectified.

Why would anyone not update firmware when given the opportunity?

They might have an Epson printer, and want to avoid the update which makes the printer reject OEM (non-Epson) print cartridges.

I wish I'd known ahead of the "download new version" button.

I have not updated my R5 yet, so still have the original version. Do I have to install the first update first and then the second one, or do I just install the latest version and it updates the first version as well? I have never updated a camera before.....any hints as to the best way to do it? Thank you for your insights!

Only the current update, 1.3.1.
Download the update from Canon. There are 2 versions. One for Mac, one for Windows. It will be a Zip file. Once you un-Zip it you will find 2 items. One will be a file folder the other will be just a single file. The file folder holds the update instructions in various languages. Remove the card from your camera. Either card. Put it in your computer and then take the single file and put it on the card. Do not put it in any folder. Just drag it and dump it on the card. If you put it in a folder the update program can't find it. Make sure you have a fully charged battery and that you have selected one of the modes, such as P, Av, etc, specified in the instructions. Go to pg 6 of the Tools section of your camera's menu. That's the yellow highlighted section with the wrench head icon. Select Firmware and then the update option. It will take several minutes for the update to run. DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR CAMERA DURING THE UPDATE. Once it is finished delete the file from your card, or, better yet, format the card. That's it. Not at all hard.
