I'm currently shooting a Nikkor 70-300 which is a little short for bird pictures. Can't afford a Nikkor 200-500 so the Tamron seems a good compromise. Is the extra 100mm worth it? Comments and suggestions welcome.

Jack, I have this lens and use it on my Canon R5 via the Canon adapter and I find the results to be very good.

Don't know your budget, if you don't mind used MPD may have a Nikon 200-500. I would guess maybe $800-900.
That lens is very good but heavy. Hope you find something that works well and fits your budget.

Happy shooting.

Thanks for the suggestion. At this point in my life to buy a Nikkor 200-500 I would have to sell my camera

I have the Tamron 100/400. For the price you won’t be disappointed. My wife shoots a 200/500 and both lenses are equally sharp.

The Tamron is selling for $800.00 and is only 100mm longer than your current 70-300. The Nikon 200-500 is put on sale for about $1150 at least three times a year. The difference in price is $350.00, the difference in image quality is night and day.
I will be selling my 200-500 mint with the box for about $900.00 in May, private message me if you would be interested. You will not be disappointed. I have bought the 500 PF Nikon and don't use the 200-500 any more.

I rented the Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD lens and used it on my D7500. It's excellent and worth ever penny of its $800 price. I checked its focusing accuracy using my DataColor SpyderLensCal. It focused accurately around the 100mm and 400mm ends but was off some in the middle focal lengths. If you get one, I would recommend getting the Tamron TAP-in console for it. Using the TAP-in console, you can fine tune the focusing at different focal lengths.

I have the Tamron 100-400, and it is my go-to lens when i feel I need a handheld zoom for birding. Admittedly, these are for sessions on walks, say in a forested area, in which the birds might be too close for a long prime. It won’t give you the reach of a 500mm, but I have been continually impressed at the shots that come this lens.

Jack I seem to mirror your set up. I too have the 70-300mm Nikkor. It is light and for what it is is fine. I don’t have the tamron but I do have the Sigma 100-400mm lens. I love it and use it quite a bit. I got it on sale for $799.00. I had been looking at it for awhile. When they knocked a $100.00 off the price I bought it. I have had it for a few months now.

Bingo! Wait until May and grab this one unless you don't want to miss out on the Tamron's six year warranty.

I just sold my Tamaron 150-600. I bought it new and used it only once for a trip to
Africa and after that it was jus collecting dust - Its better to rent one when going on a big trip.

I don't think you will the 400 to be enough. I bought a Nikon 80-400 used and it wasn't quite - the 200-500 is for most things and with the TC 14 E II, does nearly anything I ask of it. A sale or used are good possibilities. There are certainly all sorts of good lens makers, but I have always done best with the same manufacturer for lens and camera. Best of luck with your acquisition!

I have the Tamron 100-400 on my D7500 and I couldn’t be happier. It is lighter than the Nikon 200-500 and very sharp.

I owned that lens with the D7500 with good results. I sold it on UHH. You should be able to pick one up used easily. It is light and easy to handle. I found it just a bit short though better than the 300 mm. You might consider the Sigma 150-600 mm contemporary lens as well. It's a bit heavier and a little more expensive but nice to have the extra focal length. It's less expensive than the 200-500 and lighter if that makes a difference . I owned that lens too and was happy with it.
