Hi, I am new to the site. I was just wondering how you all afford the price of lenses? Would really like 400, or 600 mm Lenses but $12,000.00....... How?

Shop used. Canon L-series lenses are built to last forever. They improve over the years more in the size and lighter weight and improved IS support than absolute differences in the quality of the lens optics. The older discontinued models operate on every EOS body ever, same as the new ones, you might just need a bit more muscle to use them for extended periods of time if not mounted to a tripod / monopod.
For select lenses and camera bodies, adding an extender to a lens can add the oomph of magnification to achieve an equivalent focal length of a longer and more expensive lens.
If you do not have frequent use for those 400 and 600 mm lenses your best bet is to rent. I do not see many amateurs using those lenses often and when I do some of them have bought them but the majority have rented. If you need one of those lenses and as I said you do not have to use the lens often rent it or buy one of the 150-600 mm second hand to cover your needs.

I cannot justify those prices either. (Want vs. Need)
I got a refurb Sigma 100-400 af from Adorama for $314.00 three yrs ago. Nice lens to me though I’m now using the much better and much more expensive Sony 200-600mm.

I have the same thoughts when I see someone driving a Tesla or a Lamborghini or a hundred other examples. You have to remember, marketplace accommodates those who have more money than GOD by providing things only they can afford. For the majority of us there are much more reasonably priced options that enable us to get the same photo reach such as the 100-400 or 100-600 zooms or extenders, even used or reconditioned. Every camera and lens in my kit was purchased used. Getting a good condition "new to me" used camera or lens is just as exciting as getting a new one with much less sticker shock.
Welcome to the Hog, Cheryl, I buy used from sellers here and ebay, but I still can't afford the big prime lenses, so you are not alone. Have fun here and enjoy the site.

Welcome to UHH. I have bought a number of lenses from KEH.com and B&H’s used department and a few from eBay. Photography is an expensive hobby, but don’t buy gear just to buy gear. Buy to fill a need that what you already have can’t fill. While you are saving up your pennies do the best you can with what you have. Have fun.

Yes I agree, I have over the years purchased 2 of their big white primes and bought them used, the first one had a few chips in the paint especially on the way over price lens hood but both have worked flawlessly. The second was pretty much pristine, saved thousands on each.
