I like the camera, but want to get a better lens than the kit lens it came with and I'm thinking about the new Sigma 24/70 f2.8, I've read the reviews, everything from great lens for the money to don't waste your money. The lens looks like it's larger than the camera, which is OK with me, as long as the lens performs really well.

Anybody have any experience with this combo and a recommendation to make?

I have it and love it. Small, focuses fast, good DOF control (which is the whole point compared to the 28-60 kit lens) and focuses close. Took it on a recent trip as only lens and got great family photos with nice out of focus backgrounds, spring flower closeups and landscapes.

Would also look at the 28-75 Tamron. Sony owns 12% of the company so their emount lenses tend to work well. Shopping for a similar zoom I ended up with the Sony 24-105, great optics but only f4, but I have primes as an option for indoors. I do have the Tamron 24-70 2.8 on my Canon as I wanted IS and it’s a great lens.

I have that lens and use it on the A9, A7rIV and A7sIII and it is excellent. It’s well built, sharp wide open and totally silent just like my Sony lenses.

I believe that there are two Sigma 24-70 F2.8 for Sony lenses. I have the one that was introduced about 1.5 years ago. It is a great lens, and separates the near from far image. It is a little on the heavy side, and I think that is why they recently issued a lighter version. I would trust Sigma as their quality is very good. But I also looked at the lighter Tamron lenses. I felt the difference was that the Tamron lenses gave a little colder image, and the sharpness was the same.

I shoot with Sony A1, A7RIV and A7SIII and I love the Sigma Art 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN. It beat both the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 and the Sony 24-70mm f2.8 GM in ALL comparison tests and is the sharpest overall of the three. Even the new Sigma Contemporary 28-70 DG DN lens is sharper than both the Tamron and the Sony GM in this range. If you dont want the larger Sigma Art 24mm-70mm f2.8 then the Sigma Contemporary 28-70mm f2.8 DG DN is even smaller and lighter than the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 and sharper.

I also have the Sigma 24-70 art lens. It is very good. I debated between the Sony and the Sigma and after reading all of the reviews I could not justify paying just for the Sony name plus at the time I got a super deal from B&H on one of their daily specials. They may have a $100 rebate on it. I have been getting excellent results on my Sony 7 RIV. It is super sharp and I believe a little lighter than the Sony. The Sigma doesn't have anti shake on it but the camera does, so no real problem. The lens is also well bit.

The Tamron is the lightest of the three lens but has no control buttons and isn't as sturdy of a lens. I having said that I did buy the Tamron 2.8 70-180 which I am very happy with. The only down side to the lens is that I have to turn off auto focus in the camera. Where is counts it is a great lens. The picture quality is top notch and the lens is extremely light, less than a pound. For me weight really counts. When it comes to value, you can not beat Tamron. The Tamron also comes with a 6 year warranty.

No matter which lens you choose, you will not go wrong.

I just love this lens and it is better than either the Sony 24-70mm GM or the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8. As an award-winning pro for over four decades I could afford any lens in this category. I did my research and tried them out and the Sigma was the best. All major testers agree.

Famed Monument Valley, scene of countless movies, TV shows, commercials, Navajo Lands, Arizona/Utah border, USA. A7RIV, Sigma Art 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN lens, 32mm, f10, ISO 100, 1/60 sec.

Yosemite National Par, California. The tunnel view of (left) El Capitan; (center-rear) Half Dome with a small rising moon; (right) Bridal Veil Falls . 70mm, f8, ISO 100, 1/125 sec.

The newest Sigma Contemporary 28-70mm f2.8 DG DN is lighter and smaller than even the Tamron and still sharper than the Tamron too. It is the new baby brother to the Sigma Art 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN lens. Its size would fit perfectly on your A7C.

Like you I wanted to replace my kit lens with a more capable one and I purchased this lens. I love the lens. It handles well, takes great photographs and while heavier then the kit isn't that bad. I don't use my DSLR for videos so I can't tell you how well it performs there. The Sigma lens is great.
