I have to mention as an R/N I am in awe of this lady. I can't imagine the horrors she saw in war but rose above it to save countless lives. I have attached wikipedia link for those interested.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jane_Kendeigh

Attached photo title, April 1945: Ensign Jane "Candy" Kendeigh was the first flight nurse to arrive on Iwo Jima and, later, Okinawa. She was a pioneer of air evacuation, which saved more than 1 million wounded men during the war.

Thanks for posting. Look how young they look - just kids. She was only 22-23 years when this photo was taken. Remarkable work for anyone, let alone such a young woman. I wonder if the kids today would measure up to those who fought in WWII and those who risked their lives supporting them.

I agree. She was truly an amazing heroine. Shame she died at 65.

Oh yes, they measure up and more than we realize- but you won't hear about it on the media

I am an RN too. She sounds like a fascinating lady. I looked to see if there is a book about her. It looks like there was one, but it is out of print.

My late wife was an Army nurse during the Vietnam war. She was assigned at a trauma hospital caring for wounded evacuees. The pandemic has reminded us that all nurses are heroines everyday they show up.
