Poneer House via HDR

This old house is called the Latourell House, after which the famous Latourell Falls near Portland, Oregon are named. Built around 1890, near the very end of the Oregon Trail, it was the center of social life during the time, with dances every Saturday night, complete with Oregon's first band. People came from miles around the countryside and often stayed the night to get sober before starting the sometimes arduous journey home. There must have been a porch back then, or early settlers have very long legs.

Caught it with HDR. Do you think it would be better in B/W?

My hobby is seeking out these old pioneer structures and photographing them before they are lost forever. (Lots of designated pioneer cemeteries near here.)

Very, very nice photo. I like that you didn't overdo the HDR. Can you do a B&W and post?? I'd like to see it that way also. Thank you also for the history lesson. Very interesting!!!

Good shot Ken. I noticed the double wall construction which must have meant an affluent family. I have seen single wall construction old country homes in poorer circumstances from that period (wagons & horseback travel over dirt roads). Thanks for sharing.

LensBaby, I will try to post b&w letter today when I get home. My philosophy re HDR is to keep them as close to original, bring out hidden detail. This old house was real find because it was the home of the first band in the NW. I am a pro musician and have been researching a photo book on music in my area, which was the birthplace of the Mt Hood B
Jazz Festival which a few of us are trying to revive.

Finally a picture where HDR actually works. Makes it look spookier.

Here's both the color HDR and the black-and-white version, for comparison. I'm torn about which I like best.

Can anyone tell me why my posts never show up never show up on the daily summaries? I get responses, but never see then on the full list of topics.

I like the color one better, for what my unsolicited opinion is worth.

Thanks for posting the B&W, Kenny! I really like it also, but you did such a superb job with the HDR, that I think I favor it. I like the detail it brings out, such as the moss on the roof.

I never look at the daily summaries, so I can't help you there.

I'm looking forward to more of your posts :)

Thanks for noticing the moss, LensBaby. I'm a transplant from California to Oregon some 30 years. The saying here is that you are not a true Oregonian until the moss starts growing on the North side of your nose. I check this every morning. I have moss just about every where else.

The rainy season is about to start, and will last until sometime in July. I will need to learn to shoot in the dark, and how to keep my camera dry - it is my first winter since beginning to learn about photography. I'm looking forward to hitting some local rives and recording some great fly fishing for salmon and steelhead.

I like them both equally, although the B/W seems to do it more justice than the color
