people have to act on their own to get what they want. As a student or instructor, PhD/chem/physics, one is able to obtain software legally from Adobe for discounted price. Become a student.... no end to learning and it does pay off eventually. ;=)

FYI the discounted prices you refer to are available to students in a recognized institution, documentation is necessary. Learning never ends does it?

Adobe Photoshop CS6 Extended Student and Teacher Edition $249

What with the edu? I know it is for education. Does it means something else?

Well, giving it thought, the question you should ask is what is the ultimate goal. Ideal concept engineering, which states that every step you take in the improvement of a process should aim toward the ideal goal which in this case is power editing of photos. You may not think so now but the day will come when some easy program runs out of options.... then you will have to start learning anew..OUCH. If you will be happy the rest of your life doing grandma family photo album cropping, well, then one of the simple programs will do.

So using PSP or PSE is toward power. Gimp is also one route but you need to examine it to see if it is similar to PSP and PSE in control menus. I have GIMMP, got it because it will accommodate MathMap and also because I believe in the Open-source movement... and if the far right wing get in powered you will be labeled as an anti-market, anti-capitalist person!!! Cause it is free, and competing with a bloated over-priced $600 program.... UGH...

I second the vote for GIMP. Like all editing software of high caliber it has a steep learning curve. However a $12 investment in the following site will make it as easy as A B C and you save $700 not buying Photoshop and Get an equivalent app GIMP for $0.00. http://pareandfocus.com/

Picasa is a superb program for beginners or people who do not want to spend hours learning a program just to edit a few pictures. It has superb crop and straighten functions - very easy and intuitive to use. There are also useful lighting adjustments which can quickly correct lighting in pictures.

Paintshop Pro has far more complicated controls - but if you are going to look for more control then Photoshop Elements has more than enough for you at a reasonable price.
