Hello
I am considering this tripod - 3 Legged Thing Punks Brian Carbon Fibre Tripod - $299.00
Has anyone has any experience with this brand? I want to solidly and securely support a full frame with a telephoto lens. Reviews seem mixed.
thanks

Check the rating with your camera and lens and head for weight spec.

I just bought a new tripod and looked at them very hard. I just couldn't find enough people that had them to make me feel comfortable. The weight rating and features are there but weight rating is not a perfect way to decide. I purchased a Gitzo systematic series 5
With five leg extensions and a two-piece center column I'd think there are just too many joints for the stability a more conservative tripod design would afford.

Check Gitzo. They are considered the standard for Carbon fiber. Consider one without a center post for most rigidity.

I just received one of their monopods yesterday - I needed something for 360 and Matterport work. I've not used it yet but it looks a very robust and quality made item. I particularly needed the small tripod footprint for leaving the camera on stairs. For 90 UK pounds I'm very happy.
inbigd,
I had a 3 legged thing tripod - carbon fibre. Nice looking piece of kit but an issue with the ball head and was replaced. Whilst out using my kit the new ball head exuded thick sticky clear fluid. Never used again, bought a 4 series Gitzo and Kirk ball head, and a small Slik Pro 500DXS tripod with Gitzo ball head. Very happy with these two large and small tripods.

Without trying it on first (like you would shoes to see how well you like them walking around) I would not buy any tripod at any price.
I Owned a Three Legged Thing carbon fiber tripod before and I think they are okay for very light duty. The put more effort into making the tripod look good than they did making sure it works well. Little issues like the rubber sleeves that cover the twist locks stretching and slipping when you try to deploy the tripod to use it. They made no effort to weather seal anything, which I thought was unusual for a tripod made in the UK. I currently use a Feisol and an Induro tripod and have been satisfied with them.
for my tripod buying last summer I went to B&H to see them in person. I liked the 3 piece leg instead of 4. less work setting up and srrmed more stable. Buy your next tripod as if was your last.
I use the same tripod(Brian) for mainly macro shooting in the field. The small footprint when the legs are spread is very helpful. I use mostly a Canon 5DSR and Sigma 180mm macro-a pretty heavy combo, and have been happy with the tripod and ballhead performance. I would suggest using longer A-S plates to balance the weight of your camera/lens combo more centered over the ballhead to eliminate sag, or creep.
Buy once, cry once...and don’t have to worry about putting thousands of dollars of gear on it. Quality gear will give better results and if you are on a budget can be found at times on eBay and other selling sites at good prices. I would steer clear of a tripod that doesn’t have mainly 4 or 5 star reviews... your mileage may vary...

yes, 5 section legs means it is compromised for small collapsed sizing and less durability.
.
As a rule of thumb, I take the combined weight of my largest lens & heaviest body then add 5 pounds to it for stability purposes. & verify it has a hook to hang weights from for more stability
