I just have a few questions about digital settings on my now THIRD Coolpix camera in the last two years. My first came from a family member that was, I think, most likely bought on clearance...discontinued model, a low line Samsung that lasted eight months. Then I bought myself a Nikon Coolpix that was much nicer and had cool settings that were all new to me, but that camera went bad the times and for once, an extended warranty with Walmart ended up upgrading my camera to a Coolpix S4000. It's so tiny, I can't actually believe the features it offers. This is my problem, I can not for the life of me get a good white balance. The pics always look dark and I have to edit them online. I like to snap up close facial pics.what settings should I be using. The manual does not help.

It looks like on the top pic, you've run into what is a common problem on P&S cameras. The camera sees the very bright area back there between the trees, and sets the exposure based on that. This makes your foreground way too dark. Whenever you have an automatic setting, and a very bright area in the frame, this will happen. Take a picture of someone standing in front of a window during the day, and you'll see the same thing. The only way to overcome this is, a) change your point of view so there is light on the subject, and not behind the subject, or 2) use your flash to add what is called 'fill flash' to the close-in subject and attempt to balance out the brighter light behind him, or if your camera supports it, use exposure control to override the automatic settings. Hope this helps.

Welcome to the Hog.

I own two camera's and one of them is the Nikon s8000 coolpix. It takes beautiful pictures. So I feel that the one you have seem to be out of balanced. Take it back to the store and see if they can help you.
Suggetion also, don't buy your camera's from a big box store. Usually they know nothing about cameras and can not help you if your having problems.
Maybe you can contact Nikon directly and see if they can help you. Good luck.
