Starlings Apparently Have No Capacity to "Just Get Along"

Watching the Starlings constantly fight over food in my backyard feeders, it became apparent that they have no desire to share. I watched them as they battled at the feeder and could almost hear what one said.

That's not what they were saying, but in a family friendly context it will have to do. But I'm sure the subject of army boots was brought up.

Dear Retired CPO...I appreciate your ability to control yourself in a family friendly context. Since you know what they were "really" saying, I suspect you could possibly be a jarhead too. (I had to tone down the vocabulary I learned at Camp Pendleton fixing recruits teeth, as well.)

I only know one language well enough to say I speak it-English. But thanks to three years in the Army 66-69 and two of those in Vietnam plus over 30 years teaching in East Los Angeles I know at least a few words in about 5 languages - 99% of which would get a child who speaks those languages a major time out and his mouth washed out with soap.

Being in the military is "Educational".

"You're gonna need a bigger feeder."

😊

14 years living in NY metro area taught me how to curse and other useful phrases in a great variety of languages.

These starlings are definitely not 'love birds'.

"wearing" goulash would be rather messy. I think they meant "galoshes".

Dear adrianpd...You are correct. I liked eating goulash very much and I did mean galoshes. Thank for noticing my inability to spell correctly and helping me out. Please stay well and continue showing us your work.

Although it said "goulash" I still read it as "galoshes". I guess my brain saw what it thought it should see, not what it actually saw.

That is part of the brain's way of speed reading. Someone found that if it is a word in your vocabulary it only needs the first, last and one or two middle letters in a long word for the brain to fill in the rest and then interpret it based on context. Many years ago the American Federation of Teachers' quarterly magazine ran a series of articles on cognation and brain function relationship to different learning/activities. I don't remember who wrote them but at the time the author was a member of the leading team studying cognition in the world.
