The Beauty of Fungus

While walking my dog along the woodland bike path near my home in Columbus, OH I noticed this flower blooming on an old tree stump. I was surprised to find on closer examination that it wasn't a flower at all. I only had my cellphone with me so I snapped a few quick shots from several angles. When I returned to do a proper job later, I found some idiot had stomped all over it and destroyed a beautiful thing. Nature creates beauty and man destroys it.

Do you think that is a slime mold around the mushroom? Or part of the same organism?

I used to photograph mushrooms back in the 35 mm day but had to quit after the deer population in the nature preserve increased greatly and the darn things started to eat the mushrooms before I could get to them.

Thanks Jackm1943 - Got no idea about the mold. I found a cache of 50 morrells on the same trip. Harvested and had a mushroom feast. I haven't been back but hope I'll see some more later.
