One other quick note. I just noticed the date on the sheet. It was printed in 2006. That was around the time that the ROHS (Restrictions on Hazardous Substances) regulations went into effect in Europe. This EU directive banned the use of certain materials used in manufacturing, especially electronics. ROHS banned the use of lead and cadmium.

Certain industries, such as medical, military, aerospace, and certain industrial applications were exempted. Otherwise, lead and cadmium were banned for general and consumer use. It was actually targeted toward consumer electronics such as TVs, VCRs, DVDs, and cell phones which were filling up the landfills and leaching into the groundwater.

It looks like this item was caught up in this somehow.

The removal of lead from electronic solder has had unintended and unpleasant consequences. The growing of “tin whiskers” over time in non lead soldered connections and board traces can disable electronics including cameras, hence the reason that DOD is exempt from the regulation in the US. Fortunately, I can still purchase new old stock of classic Kester 60/40 solder for my amateur electronic work.

Probably also known to the state of California to cause cancer.

Rather than posts the famous image of a poisoned child from toxic dumping of methylmercury into Kumamoto Prefecture Minamata Bay and Shiranui Sea in Japan by chemical company Chisso Corp. I will simply state what those in denial may not want to here.

From the EPA "Highest allowable average mercury concentration in fish per serving when eating 1 serving per week = 0.46 µg/g. Any fish with an average mercury concentration greater than 0.23 µg/g up to 0.46 µg/g was placed in the “good choices – eat 1 serving a week” category."

The above is from EPA and FDA Advice for:
Women Who Might Become Pregnant
Women Who are Pregnant
Nursing Mothers
Young Children

methylmercury is an increasing and ever present concern.
btw, mercury is readily converted to methylmercury by microbes

That said it appears to me that UHH may be overrun with aging males who seem to have little concern for women of childbearing age. Some of the insensitive post in this thread tend to corroborate this inference...

I for one applaud the mission of those charged with the responsibility of protecting those who may be in harms way owing to corporate obsession to generate maximum revenue without meaningful regard for the consequences of same.

I had a bottle of mercury as a kid that I played with all the time. Pouring some out, breaking it up into several pools, pushing it all back together, then scooping it up with a piece of paper to put it back into the bottle. I'm still here!

Be wise, even tho you like to crunch things, this filter is not a good choice... stick to potato chips [air baked low salt of course]

Thomas902 knows his stuff... the fish contaminated with MM were disastrous. Old story ... Alice in Wonderland guess what happened to make the Mad Hatter .. crazy ...

Mad hatter’s disease is caused by chronic mercury poisoning. It is characterized by emotional, mental, and behavioral changes, among other symptoms. A doctor may describe the neurological changes as erethism or mercurial erethism. In this article, we explore the causes, symptoms, and treatments of mercury poisoning. We also briefly look into the history of the saying “mad as a hatter.”

Daguerreotype ... First commercially successful photographic process, invented by L. Daguerre in 1839: a silver-plated copper sheet is treated to make light-sensitive, exposed in a camera, developed with mercury vapor, treated to remove light-sensitivity, gilt, sealed.

I had some of that, too. We didn't know it would kill us so it didn't. I also played many games of Yard Darts and never was impaled by a dart.

I saw one negative comment, (by a user that consistently lives up to his handle), and one user that liked his post. I don’t see where we’re overrun with these people.

Still alive. We won’t bring up the apparent brain damage.

Are those results from 2006 still accurate in April 2021?

I guess not because MSDS has changed to SDS now.

Quite interesting - just received a B&W CPL filter and tucked inside the box was a MSDS. Never before seen one for any photo equipment. Very happy to know the filter is OSHA compliant....

While not photo equipment, our custom lab had to maintain a looseleaf binder of Material Safety Data Sheets for OHSA and anyone's inspection. We had them for every chemical used for processing film, prints and finishing. We also had them for products such as lens cleaner, no-scratch, glass cleaner, sharpies, etc. Somehow, we received one for toothpaste (forgot the brand) and that was an eye-opener!

Be well! Ed

Yup, and if you had glass cleaner you had to have a specific SDS sheet to that brand. It was a total nightmare with (the the time) MSDS sheets for all of the different darkroom chemicals. The SDS change over was a bit after the time we finally quit running E-6 and the B&W side which made life easier. "However" we then needed SDS sheets for all the laser printer cartridge's and of course Uncle Sam always went low bidding and it was always a nightmare to get the sheets of "that" particular brand. Printer ink was a breeze but some companies stretched the MSDS/SDS change over to the bitter end. Of course our safety officer made my department (i.e. me) go through this exercise every 6 months and initial and date each sheet to prove I was in compliance. The high mucky-mucks would hit the area and never ask to see the sheets. During the walk through they'd see the big thick yellow notebook and keep on going. (ahem) Fun times.

Read the book “Radium Girls” and you’ll be glad we have OSHA watching out for our safety. Pretty girls dying in a horrible manner. It is also a movie, but the book is better.
