Just got a set of Kenko tubes for my D70s. Shots hand held, 36mm tube, ISO 200, Nikon 70-300, no PP. F stop varied with each.
I know the DOF isn't quite what I wanted but having a hard time with the old eyes and the hands are a little shaky too. Still learning manual settings.
Not too shabby! Eyes in second image sharper than first image.
Lack of steadiness (exaggerated camera movement) and shallow DoF are products of long-lens macro-photography. Tripods are recommended at or beyond about 150-mm focal length.
All Exif data was lost when you cropped from original. For our benefit, please post actual focal length used (from Exif info).

Thanks Nikonian72. My set up is very similar to yours.
I should have said no PP except for crop.
#1 f/8, 1/250, ISO 200, 70mm focal length.
#2 f/8, 1/125, ISO 200, 70mm focal length.
#3 f/22, 1/60, ISO 200, 56mm focal length.
The third one I think I used my Nikon 28-80.
I am also still learning how to use the SB600 flash and O flash attachment. So far I am just not getting enough illumination when using it.

Please try ISO 400, 1/200-sec at f/16, SB-600 set to manual 1/1, to start.

Thank you very much, I will give those setting as try. Searching around for that sweet spot I'm sure is there somewhere.
Nice shots!!
