I have seen this many times and never gave much thought to it. I tried several compositions and decided to focus on the aviator from the perspective of where the families would be.

I like the statue and the shot. My mom told me that when my dad came home from WWII, I was born while he was gone, I hid behind her skirt. It took us a long time to like each other

Thanks for the feedback! Deployments aren't easy on anyone, so I can understand how you would have been shy around this "stranger" you never met. I was lucky enough to not have kids during my deploying days, but it was still awkward adjusting to the nuances of married life when I came back.
