Best of... TOSS IT!!!

Its probably best not to suggest your best is the best there is available
It may not be, that's just an opinion....
Don’t find any need for “best of” in gear. Got plenty, and so some items very likely qualify, but they were not chosen on that basis. It’s just a statistical likelihood.
They all get along just fine, sharing the same bags, many intermarrying. I know some think adapting is against nature, but we encourage it ;-)

"Best of" is a family joke.
When we first moved to CT we looked online to find the best burger and the best pizza. Neither of the results was pleasant.
Hope you found both because they do exist in CT 😁
Ron,
These questions used to be ably answered by the knowledgeable folks at the local Camera Shop. Or articles in a Phot magazine. Both are extinct. But, some of our generation, who are used to such things, I know you remember, are at a loss for teh info. The Club suggestion is good, if you can find one where members are even slightly nice.
So, I urge us all to hold our frustrations. I'm only 7 years into Digital, and I remember what it felt like.
For the OP: I bet there is a YouTube that addresses going Digital from using an SLR. EVERY DSLR or MILC has all teh functions (without even looking) as your FG. Using Google, you can ascertain what Nikon lenses work on which bodies, not really different from the old says.
WIth mirrorless technology driving the Manufacturing cost down, in an already decreasing demand market--DSLR's and Interchangeable Mirrorless cameras--like us grown ups like to use, I suggest making the switch to a Mirrorless Interchangeable Camera. Nikon, Canon and Sony dominate. Pick one in your budget and "hand Feel" comfort zone. A kit will get you a zoom lens with basic range of focal lengths. The 70-200's abound, and the Sigma's snf Tamron's are really good and wills save you some money.
But Ron's point, as usual, is to be taken seriously. Read, it's on the internet now, and take your first steps. Then, join back into the fun of photography.

Quite frankly the 'best' is entirely subjective and makes no sense at all if you consider real issues like reliability, consistence of services and results... There are often ignored in favor of ridiculous criteria.
So... TOSS THE DAMNED REVIEWS and do your own research based on your own criteria, at least they will be YOUR criteria not some guy that may or may not have an interest in promoting something.
Same goes, Hey! This restaurant is good! Well, it is a vegan restaurant and I like my steak blue. Think I can get it there? Of course, I am pushing it here, but this is what we are confronted with all the time: recommendations from folks who do not know you yet want to tell you what is good for you.
Since you are at it, toss the "HOW TO" that rarely addresses what you really need to know. This is especially true in photography a full book for two useful pages? What a waste.

Good points!
Reviews are good only in the aggregate — read or watch ten on the same gear, from different sources. If nine agree, it’s probably truth.
I have watched 33 reviews of the new Macs with M1 SOCs. The consensus is 31 thumbs up. The other two were by people who don’t have a clue about Macs, and never will. So I had a good idea of what to do for my college student...
