What would be a good all around inexpensive portrait lens for a Canon DSLR

Define "inexpensive". To some, it's under $100. To others, it's under $1000. $500 could probably buy you any of at least a half-dozen well-regarded lenses. The Canon 85 and 100mm non-L lenses are not bad, and you can get either for under $500. The 100mm f/2.8 macro is also not bad, but it's a little more $$$. If you have an APS-C sensor camera, you probably don't want to go much wider than 50mm. Sigma and Tamron probably make comparable glass, but I have no direct hands-on with them.
Hi am Birdie from TX and looking forward to posting some photos one day soon...love looking at all that you guys have taken and hope to continue to see more...
Thanks JimH....I guess I'm looking for under $200. I was looking at a canon 50mm that was like $110 had some good reviews too. Just want to buy one that I won't regret later

The Canon 50mm f/1.8, or as it's known, "Nifty Fifty" is a sub-$100 lens that should be in the bag of every Canon shooter. It's plastic, and can not quite compare to the 50mm f/1.2 or other >$500 lenses, but for a hundred bucks, it can't be beat. It's at the low end of what most people would call 'portrait' range, but it's perfectly good within its limitations. Grab one.
