Thanks, your answer got to my issue. What options are best for the xqd slot. I don't know anything about CFExpress. Do they fit the XQD slot? Are there advantages?

The CFExpress is potentially faster and now easier to find, but either card is plenty fast enough for your D500. The difference is XQD is a proprietary format owned by Sony and CFExpress is open source. Just realize that whichever way you go you’ll need a card reader for that format. Before I got an XQD reader for my D500 I would copy the images in camera to the SD card and download from it. Then I got an XQD reader. Then I got a Z7 and found I was running out if space on the 64gb XQD card when focus stacking so I bought a 128gb CFExpress card and had to buy another reader for that format.

Also as CFExpress is “new” technology, the $$$ is more...I believe my 64GB CFExpress card was about $115...CFSExpress card reader about $75....Before deciding to stick with XQD, that technology is going to be phased out.....like everything else in this throw away society😜

Thank you.that is exactly what I needed to know.

I got my D500 a month ago I bought a sd2 card and a CF-express card as my camera was already upgrade with 1.30 so I didn't need a xqd card. I'm quite happy with the resusts

How is YOUR memory? Hopefully better than mine. I have two cards in my D7200 and glad I do because a few times I have taken one card out, inserted it into my laptop to upload images and forgotten to reinsert the card back into the camera. When that happens and you're away from home on a photo shoot you'll be extremely thankful for that second card.

That has happened to me more times than I can count. I'm thinking, "oh, crap, my card is still in the computer!", but then I realize that the second card is still in the camera and I'm good to go!.

I purchased by D500 in mid-2017, and from the outset I've had a 64GB XQD in the first slot, since it's so much faster than an SD, and I occasionally take burst shots of birds and grandkids. I have a 32GB SD in the second slot just in case I fill up the XQD or the XQD fails, neither of which has never happened.

I have the same size cards, but use the XQD for Raw and the SD for JPG. I have never filled the buffer on the D500.

Amen Brother. Been there done that. I have QXD 64Gb and San Disk 64Gb SD's as back ups in both my D500 and 850. I do burst at air shows and BIF and maybe filled the QXD once. Never had a failure but glad they are both there.

Just be aware that if you are saving backup raw files to the SD card, you might as well be using the SD as your primary card. The file is written to the primary card, then the backup card, and the camera buffer is not freed up until both writes are complete. As long as you don't exceed the capacity of the camera buffer, this is usually not a problem unless you want to shoot again before transfer is complete.

I recently bought my wonderful D500. I need advice about what to use in the top card slot considering all of the recent hubbub about cards. I do not need or want anything greater than 64 gig as I seldom shoot video. It seems a waste to not use it if for nothing but overflow or redundancy, storage. Also, I don't want to break the bank.Thanks.

I use CFExpress cards, but XQD cards work, too. Use SanDisk or Sony SD cards in the second slot.
