I am looking to buy a bridge camera. Think I’ve narrowed it down to a Nikon Coolpix P950 or the Canon Power Shot SX 70. Am I giving up quality of picture for more zoom with the Nikon??

I agree. However, the Sony is much more expensive than either of the bridge cameras he's considering.

But it is much better at 600mm telephone and clarity like never seen!

Before I purchased the Canon SX50, I tried the Cool Pix P500, or whatever it was called at the time. The primary problem for for me was the Nikon's design. It was significantly different from Canon's. Canon's felt much more comfortable, perhaps because I had a Canon Rebel dslr.

The design might be something to consider when evaluating - assuming you are able to visit a store where you can hold them in your hands.

Another consideration when comparing equivalent focal lengths is how steady are you? Can you hand-hold a lightweight bridge camera with a long reach and not suffer motion blur issues? A windy day can kill you

I had both for a short time, kept the Nikon. The Nikon P950 is fantastic. Not only does it take great photos, it is a really fun camera to use. Does not do BIFs well, however.
I found the additional weight compared to the SX70 actually reduced camera shake. Go to forums section at dpreview.com and view the photos and discussions in the Nikon Coolpix forum. Lots of personal experiences and plenty of photos posted.

I yield to no-one in my affection for the Sony RX10iv. But it's not "fair" to compare it to the P950 simply because the P950 has an "equivalent" focal length that is more than 3X greater (600 vs 2000).

Both cameras are, IMO, brilliant designs but designed for different sets of choices.

Since I don't know anything about the Canon, this is simply a response to some comments, not the OP's questions.

The size of the Nikon will surprise you when you get it in your hands. It is a big bridge camera.

I have a Nikon p900 & find that if I am only taking one camera with me on a given day, I take the Nikon p900 for the range and easy usability. It does have some weight to it, but at my age & not always steady hand the weight can be an advantage.

You should also look at the Panasonic Lumix bridge cameras.

I would also suggest a look at Sony. I don’t know the current equivalent but I’ve had my Cybershot HX100 (30x) for 10 years and continue to use it for sports and concerts. It has great image stabilization and burst mode. I admit I never looked at other makes. Examples.....
