Those are great photos. The Matterhorn is an impressive piece of rock/mountain. Personally I have never seen it, but wish I had.

Thanks very much Hereford. There is something magical about the Matterhorn which attracts your eye and your lens. You’ll see many more views of this iconic peak in my next few posts.

These photos are wonderfully exposed. That is a real challenge in an Alpine environment with a strong component of UV light, and surprisingly strong reflections from Granite Schist even miles away. I enjoyed my time there and you're telling me that my Ektachrome slides need another review!

Thanks so much Craig. Exposure was indeed a challenge and I had to correct foreground under exposure in post processing on several of the images.

The Gornergrat (English: Gorner Ridge; 3,135 m (10,285 ft)) is a rocky ridge of the Pennine Alps, overlooking the Gorner Glacier south-east of Zermatt in Switzerland. It can be reached from Zermatt by the Gornergrat rack railway (GGB), the highest open-air railway in Europe. Between the Gornergrat railway station (3,090 m (10,140 ft)) and the summit is the Kulm Hotel (3,120 m (10,240 ft)). In the late 1960s two astronomical observatories were installed in the two towers of the Kulmhotel Gornergrat. The project “Stellarium Gornergrat” is hosted in the Gornergrat South Observatory.

It is located about three kilometers east of Zermatt in the Swiss canton of Valais. The Gornergrat is located between the Gornergletscher and Findelgletscher and offers a view of more than 20 four-thousand metre peaks, whose highest are Dufourspitze (Monte Rosa massif), Liskamm, Matterhorn, Dom and Weisshorn.

This is the last stop of the Gornergrat train, opened in 1898, which climbs almost 1,500 m (4,900 ft) through Riffelalp and Riffelberg. At the terminus on the south-western tip of the ridge is a hotel. The station forms part of the Zermatt ski area. From 1958 to 2007 there was a cable car from Gornergrat over the Hohtälli (3,275 m (10,745 ft)) to the Stockhorn (3,405 m (11,171 ft)) which, until the construction of the Klein Matterhorn cable car, was the highest mountain station in Zermatt. At the west side of the Gorner Ridge, nearby the Rotenboden railway station is the peak Riffelhorn (2,928 m (9,606 ft)).

The Gornergrat train goes from the village centre in Zermatt to Gornergrat (3,089 m) in 33 minutes. From this vantage point, one of the most beautiful mountain panoramas in the world opens up – with a view of the Matterhorn (4,478 m). The base station of the Gornergrat train is on the Bahnhofplatz in the centre of Zermatt. The train is a technical masterpiece of 19th century engineering. It made its maiden trip to Gornergrat on 20 August 1898.

The train engineers of the 19th century created the world’s first fully electric cog railway. It travelled through forests and over meadows high up to Gornergrat, where Switzerland’s highest hotel is located, the 3100 Kulmhotel Gornergrat. The train already connected three hotels in the 19th century: the Hotel Riffelberg (2,600 m), which opened in 1855, the Riffelalp Resort (2,222 m), and the Kulmhotel (3,100 m). The highest outdoor train station is at 3,089 m – the end of the Gornergrat Bahn railway.

When the Gornergrat train was inaugurated, the glaciers were much longer than today. The Gorner glacier cut its way through its bed at the foot of the Monte Rosa massif. Guests from around the world trekked to the side moraine and faced the huge ice blocks of the glacier. Today, the glacier has receded considerably. Alpinists can reach the Monte Rosa hut from the Rotenboden Station via the Gornergrat glacier.

Fortunately the windows of the Gornergrat cogwheel train opened downward so I was able to capture the magnificent scenery without worrying about window glare. The views of the Matterhorn were unbelievable and I couldn't resist taking pictures from every angle so I hope you're not bored by them. Please enjoy these and the next few sets which I'll post soon.
