I definitely don't intend to ditch my DSLR, and am also considering getting a new prime lens. Like several of you, I have always considered my iPhone primarily as a phone and only an occasional pocket camera. That's why I'm still using the old dinosaur iPhone 5. But seeing the good quality pictures coming out of my wife's iPhone 11, I am tempted to join the 21st century and am curious about the differences between the iPhone 11 PRO and 12Pro - is it worth the extra $$$? The price is pretty high if I think of it as just another "phone." but my old phone will need to be replaced sometime soon. Decisions, decisions. Maybe that's what the government stimulus check will end up stimulating !!!
Also thanks for pointing out that there is an iPhone discussion section in this forum. I was not aware of that and will definitely check it out.

It's worth the extra money. The only area in which it is lacking is telephoto. You should know that in addition to its camera, it is a powerful computer capable of some amazingly useful applications.

I still se no true telephoto shots, wide angle only to 50mm normal (2X telephoto for the phone).

So? Look, I'm not advocating for either the iphone or a dslr. But your argument about cost got blown to bits. However, the dslr still has a few more capabilities than the iphone camera....for now. Camera manufacturers have had decades to get where they are today, phones just a few years. It almost seems like the phone manufacturers want to improve their cameras better and more urgently than camera manufacturers.

My iPhone 11 Pro Max is not meant to replace my Nikons but is a quick-draw out of the pocket for a quick don’t-want-to-miss shot when my DSLR’s are not within easy reach.

I have the iPhone 12 Pro Max. From what I have read is the Pro has around a 52mm for its long lens and the Pro Max is around 65mm for its ‘tele’. I upgraded from a 10 so I saw a great improvement in the camera. Not cheap, but it is a very descent backup camera.

LE White...

With all due respect, I will keep my Canon R5... I still enjoy & have the abilities to benefit from it capibilities..

BUT, having said that... YES, there are times, and people who perfore the 'cell phone' as an alternative... One such person is my whife, who is 75 years old, unwilling and many times unable to carry the larger camera, and here iPhone 12 Pro Max which I bought for her.. does here quite well...

I recently read an article in Outdoor Photographer magazine which pretty much raved about the new iPhone 12pro and iPhone 12ProRAW camera capabilities.
Just wondering if any of you fellow Ugly Hedgehoggers have any experience with this new and fairly expensive iPhone? I am still using my OLD iPhone 5 which is getting ready to go into retirement and am wandering if its worth while getting the 12pro and is it any better than an iPhone 11 Pro? Camera wise, I am shooting with a well used Nikon D7100 with mostly a Tamron 18-400 mm lens. I'm fairly happy with the results but am also impressed with the pictures my wife get with her iPhone 11, which she just pulls out of her pocket and snaps, rather than me lugging a big lens on a big camera, etc. So, should I get (a) better lens or lenses for the money Apple charges for the phone, or should I keep the camera and lens I have and just add a new phone to my repertoire? I know, its ultimately my choice, but I was just wandering what your thoughts on the iPhone 12PRO or PRORAW are.

I was a "real camera" only guy until just a few months ago. Then I saw some of the first photos from the iPhone 12 Pro posted on the hog. Wow! Then I pulled out my iPhone 6, went outside & took a few pics, Processed them in Photoshop & NIC. Surprise1 They looked surprisingly good. Then studied up on the iPhone 12 Pro & bought one. Got it with Pro raw. The iPhone 12 pro is much more advanced than the iPhone 11 Pro. As Dave said this "computational photography" thing is a big deal. You shoot a pic in Pro raw. Lower the camera & look at your photo. In just an instant the camera has made an average reading exposure, a highlight based exposure, a shadow based exposure, combined them and reduced the noise generated from a small sensor. And there, right before your eyes you have a photo with highlight detail, shadow detail, and noise reduction! Now you get to do your Photoshop thing if you choose. I can only make prints up to 17x22, but they are amazing hanging on the wall. The iPhone 12 pro is good at what it does. It has 3 lenses of approx equivalents of 56mm, 28mm & 14mm. They have no telephoto lenses at all. So your 400mm reach should be kept. I really enjoy my one button push on the iPhone. When I want to go back to "real photography" as I was taught at the New York Institute of Photography many years ago, I fill my car with spot meters my Toyo 4x5 View camera & have at meditative photography. Both styles are justified in my mind. Good luck in whatever direction you run. Lynn

After a long trip through Europe carrying my Nikon 7100 almost everywhere , I noticed my Iphone X photos taken when I did not expect interesting sites to present themselves were as good as the Nikon shots. The 7100 can be heavy is held throughout the day, more weight than a cellphone. I only look at y photos on he computer so I did not see a great difference. For the last year the Nikon has stayed in the box and my Iphone on my belt.

I'm an amateur, taking pictures for the joy of capturing all the cool things that nature does, in the moment. I share with friends and relatives on social media. I have gone through a fair amount of money buying and selling mirrorless cameras and lenses and several bridge cameras (the Nikon P-1000 and the Sony RX10 iv, which was an amazing camera). I have settled on the Sony RX100 vii and the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Both are small and are there when I need them. My iPhone pics get more "likes" than pics shot with the Sony! (I use Lightroom and Luminar for post-processing.) I would say that the iPhone 12 Pro Max is the best camera investment I have made for the way I do photography.

This is a personal opinion, but my main reason for having a cell phone is for communication. The fact that it has a camera in it is an added nicety when I do not have one of my cameras with me. I cannot, nor will not, try to justify spending as much, or more, for a phone as I have for a DSLR. Having started my photography avocation with a movie camera and then to a film SLR, I've grown accustomed to using a camera for photos. Just my preference.

I now use TracFone with a Samsung Galaxy. I think I paid $50 for the phone, and I've averaged about $6.00/month in phone charges. My son uses his phone constantly, and he's averaged about $12/month.

The clouds and water don't have much detail or clarity.
I'll stick with my DSLRs and mirrorless cameras, thank you.

It was tweaked in Lightroom and made into a 16"x 20" acrylic.
