PS CC Saving PNG files and avoiding export pixel size limitations...

PNG files can be saved in 8, 24, 32 and 48 bits. The key is what you select in the export and using saving as.

8 bits images: Export as PNG, small size. (5.4 mb on disk)
24 bits images: Export as PNG no transparency (13.5 mb on disk)
32 bits images: Export as PNG transparency enabled (15.3 mb on disk)

Note that when exporting using PS CC options creates a pixel size limit you cannot override.

48 bits images: Use "Save as PNG". (46 mb on disk)

The image used for the disk size comparisons was not overly complex and the size was 5568 x 1841 pixels.

Remember PNG is a lossless compression format, so the files can be humongous. (JPG sizes are nothing to spit at either 65,535 x 65,535 pixels)

One of the things to note with large files is that one can use Save As Large Document Format (PSB). This avoids the limits placed on .psd files.

Due to my processing procedures, I regularly create documents that exceed the limits set by .psd format. Large Document Format avoids that issue.

What would be the benefit to the much higher bit rates?

Ask the scientist who use them. I have no clue considering that whatever we do as photographers we cannot see the difference between two color shade if they are close...

The goal of this thread is to show how the choices made when exporting influence the bit depth and how to override the pixel size limitations that exist in 'export' by using 'save as'.
