I use two computers, one Windows and one Ubuntu with one keyboard, mouse, and monitor. I just installed a switch that connects to everything and changes all from one computer to the other at the touch of a button.

Yup, I have a KVM switch in my computer parts box.
Really nice when I needed it.

Years ago, I had a device that let me use two computers with one keyboard, etc. Then it stopped working

There is a switch that does that. You plug in your keyboard and monitor to the switch, then connect the keyboard and monitor from the switch to the two computers. Switch has two sets of monitor and keyboard lines or cables. Connect them to the computer. The switch designates a hot key on your keyboard. Press the hot key twice and it changes the computer monitor/keyboard. I don't member the name. My son told me about the switch and I picked one up at Fry's. This was many years ago and it out lasted both computers
