We have lived here since 1972 and until last year had never seen Pileated Woodpeckers. Last year we saw one at our bird feeder feasting on the suet. It visited about 6 or 8 times . This year there is a mating pair that's coming to the feeder. Recently they have been checking out our oak tree which is about 12 feet from the feeder making for better images. I only included the shot on the feeder to show what's bringing them in. The last one is about 200 feet from our back deck.

Nicely done. Let's hope they raise a brood near you.

Thanks! There is a 13 acre woods at the end of our street. We're 2nd to the last house on the street; I'm going to take a walk out into the woods to see if I can spot their nesting tree. I know of one tree that has a hollow in it big enough that a couple of turkey buzzards used it two years ago. That would be my first guess.

They are a magnificent bird, and to have them living in the 13 acre woods at the end of our street is really good fortune. Thanks for the kind words.
