What can you put on them, eg. photos and what else, I have a WD 1TB I put photos and what else can you put on them from your computer?
They're computer storage, nothing more or less. Any file you can save to your computer, you can copy to your connected hard drive.
You can put there your Grandma's recipes or verses from the Bible.
Any files you want.
Documents, spread sheets, manuals, receipts, etc..
Are you putting them there for usage or backup.
(I wouldn't have working files for usage in two places.)
Do you have another computer in the house?
Youtube has EZ instructions to make it a "share", and both can have access.

You should also have at least two backup drives.
Why two?
Safety in case one fails or you make a mistake and delete some data you wish you didn't.
With two or more drives, both with the same data you then have some safety.
Data = pictures, videos, spreadsheets, word-processing files etc.
Me, myself have five drives all with the same data.
Any computer file you want.
I would get a 2nd external drive and have 2 backups for all your pictures and things worth saving. ALL hard drives die, sooner or later, you NEED TWO.
