Wish list for a sling bag

My wish list;
Carry D850 with a 50mm lens attached.
Center strap with left or right shoulder use.
Enough room for the camera and just a bit more but that's it.

I want to use this while riding a bicycle on a flat path; stop bike (not get off), sling bag, extract camera, and shoot.
Bike showing the center bar I will stand over.

I tried a rack on the back but it was to hard for me to get on and off the bike. I am also considering some kind of handle bar bag.

FYI-Bike path: Long Island south shore. Ocean Parkway Coastal Greenway Path

The new path, spanning over 14 miles, is now open to pedestrians and bicyclists.
Ellen Farrant Memorial Bikeway along the Wantagh State Parkway to the Jones Beach Boardwalk and then runs from Jones Beach to Tobay Beach in the Town of Oyster Bay and onto Captree State Park in the Towns of Babylon and Islip.

I will have to take a second look. Bought and sold the Think Tank Urban Access 8 Sling Bag, too small. Will look at these. Thanks

Look at the Mindshift sling. I use it for my D850 (without motor drive) w/ 24-120 and 50mm 1.8 in other compartment.

I've had this for about 3 years. Tough design with lots of attachment points thanks to molle webbing. It gets tossed into my work vehicle every night and is still in great shape. Not your typical camera bag company but they build good stuff:

I'm in the same boat. Henry Hudson Trail in NJ. I need a bag, or basket & bag combo I can put the D810 /200-500 in on the handle bars for quick retrieval for wildlife. Mostly Sandy Hook NP. For other types of photography I don't mind getting on & off the bike. I don't mind getting off for wildlife but there is a pretty good chance it won't be around by the time I get off & grab the camera.

I would encourage you to look at the Hazard 4 bag. You can configure it as side or top loading. In you case I would do top loading and use the velco divider to put the camera right at the top. Lots of padding in case you bang it into something. Exterior compartments for batteries, cards etc.

I have no connection to the company but prefer tough and really like molle and it checked those boxes for me.

Because of the bicycle you might be better served with a true messenger bag which can be secured better to your back; an example of which can be seen here: https://missionworkshop.com/collections/messenger-bags
Tenba, and probably others, produces a padded insert to convert your bag into a camera bag: https://www.tenba.com/en/products/accessories-byob/byob-camera-inserts

I'm not pushing any particular brand, just offering another way to think about solving the problem.

This may sound convoluted but really works for me. After many a trial and error I have the following set up. I got a Vanquest Ibex. You cannot beat the quality of their packs. Then I got a Condor H20 pouch. This has thick padding, holds my 100-400 lens and fits in the bottom of the Ibex. I got a Think Tank 2.0 V2 that holds the camera with either the 18-200 or 100-400 lens. (So disappointing that when it is extended to hold the long lens there is not much protection, hence the Condor H2O pouch.) This fits on top in the Ibex with the short lens.. I also got the Capture 1 clip that will go on a backpack strap. This holds the camera with the long lens snug against my shoulder and I can be doing other things… Riding a 4-wheeler or working a dog or just plain hiking.

This set up has my camera safe and secure in a minimal pack ready to go. Of course the extra pockets and space in the backpack are put to use.

When I get to my destination I use the think tank as a shoulder bag, or the capture 1. If I attach the long lens I just put the short lens into the Condor.

Like I said, this may sound convoluted. With the Capture 1 the camera is protected by my left arm and I can use my other arm. Or, I can put my camera into the pack quickly around livestock and not have it damaged.

Many times I don’t even know if I will actually use the camera so the Think Tank has it out of the pack and carries well crawling through underbrush and the like.

The pack keeps everything together and protected for whatever I run into. It can also be separated out so that everything is handy from the beginning.

I do all kinds of things from working sheep to cutting and burning brush to just playing hiking to find something interesting. As I said, I have to have my stuff safe and the able to put it away quickly. Also to have it ready when needed. The only thing I would change on this is if the Think Tank had protection for the long lens. However, that would make it less adjustable.

My lifestyle is different from many others. If you are not doing other things where you need to protect your camera as well as get to it quickly, perhaps a different set up will work better.

😁
