Sidewalk dining, NYC.
For the first time in nine months, my wife and I sat down at a restaurant table yesterday. During the pandemic, restaurants have been allowed to expand beyond the sidewalks into the streets. Those expansions are going to remain for sometime into the future, which, if the kitchens can handle it, might help the businesses. That’s a change.
What has not changed is one of the reasons I love to “dine al fresco.” Free entertainment.
Jeez, that’s a reason to stay in!
As a fellow NYer I can tell you it has been BIZARRE with this outdoor dining. Many restaurants have discovered a simple loophole - use the CARES act and other funding to building an INDOOR extension of their restaurant on the sidewalk or gutter. I saw one the other day (wish I snapped it with my phone) which looked like community housing complete with separate double door entrances for each "apartment" with its own dining table and chairs, separated by a plexiglass windows/walls. There's also complete lighting, heating and even plumbing in some cases. These structures are very elaborate - four walls, a canted roof, and multiple doors, lighting, heat, etc. During the winter I discovered how much cold I can tolerate outside while eating breakfast, and 25 deg F is no problem. My favorite bagel place has a less elaborate structure open on 1 side. With the weather getting warmer outdoor dining will be the norm for me in NYC. INDOOR is the new OUTDOOR!
Where I live that thing would be jailed for indecent exposure.
One more reason why I strongly (I was going to say hate, but that sounds harsh and might intrude on someone's safe space) dislike and will NOT visit NYC with ANY other option available.
That's discusting, I'm glad I left NY 18 years ago!
He is dressed for "casual Friday"
Frightening really! Probably just out of his meds.
Now that might ruin my appetite
Is that her/his after effect of the second COVID shot?

“Dining al fresco” should be an enjoyable outdoor experience, I know in Europe and in the majority of places in America it is....now I wouldn't call that entertainment because I usually wouldn't dine in or outside watching a total freak show. Dining outside? NYC should clean the streets of this garbage.
