A question of ethics.

Not sure if this is the right forum but if not I’m sure it will get moved.
There have been some incredibly good pictures posted on UHH. I have saved some at times just so I can look at them again without a search. They eventually get deleted......and maybe replaced by another.
My question is: is it ethical to use any of these for personal use. Often when I have been choosing photos for
my yearly photo calendar I am tempted to use one or two. I haven’t yet, mainly because I wouldn’t be able to say “yes that is one I took” when someone admires a photo.
Since there is no intent to make money off it, and it was posted by the photographer on the internet, would it be ok to use a photo for that purpose? Thanks for your input.

I would say if they are out on internet you can use them and NOT MAKE $ OFF OF THEM

No, it is never OK to use someone else's photo unless you ask them for permission.

Feel free to use them for personal use BUT make sure to add a photo credit.

When in doubt, send a PM to the person who took the photo and ask them.

If I was making a calendar I would want it to be my own pictures, so maybe you could work on that.

Just a thought.

If it is out there, not being sold, for personal, home use, don't see why not. (I would never do it because of pride. How could I, a photographer, sink so low as to present another photographer's work in my own home? Am I that bad I can't fill the house with my own work?)

Many people post simply for one's viewing pleasure.
If one want's to use it for one's own personal pleasure (ie. display in the house), I think it would be quite appropriate to ask the owner if they would mind if the image could be used in that manner.
If the image owner's intent is to sell the image, using it in that manner would be denying a sale to the photographer.

I also have seen many fantastic images on the net, but I won't use (print) any of them as they are not mine.
(But that's just me.)

I once had a person from another country ask me if they could use an image to do an oil painting.
I replied yes, and I thanked them for asking.

I wouldn't have an issue with it. If this was a calendar you intended to have just in your home, that's fine. There is no way in the world any photographer could realistically stop you doing it. A photographer who uploads photos should totally understand things like this may occur and if they are bothered by it, keep your pics off the net.

Common sense needs to prevail.

Well, I think if you said, "this is a photo from my collection. I'm not sure if I took the photo, or it was one I acquired."

When a photo is posted in the forum for a reason other than demonstration purposes, the most frequent reason will be for sharing. If your only intention is to keep it on your PC for the viewing pleasure of yourself and friends/family, that could be described as extended sharing. The only time ethics become an issue is if you have a questionable purpose in mind.
