Apple Photos stopped exporting?

So here's the situation - yesterday I dutifully did the Photos upgrade as urged by my iMac. I am running Catalina 10.15.7.
Today, after selecting a few photos and choosing to Export, the first dialog box appeared as usual, but the second dialog box did not. That's the one that showed into which folder the exports would go.
And lo and behold, it seems nothing got exported. I tried both kinds of export (which previously would default to sending the exported images to two different folders) but now, nothing.
Anyone have any ideas? I use Lightroom for serious stuff, but wince Apple "conveniently" pushes photos taken with the iPhone to the Photos app it's easier to export from there when it's for minor things.
I posted the question on the Apple community forum, but perhaps someone here has already dealt with the problem...if so, TIA for your help

Thanks for the suggestion- but it finally started to work again after I quit and restarted it 3 times

They sometimes are - as with Windows, updates from the company sometimes screw up what used to work...
