Frustrated with the IRS

I guess I need to vent a bit and thought this post might help! Anyway, I understand that with it being income tax season and the government dumping the distribution of stimulus checks on them, that the IRS is very busy, but there has to be some way to contact them about issues and it seems like they do everything possible to prevent you from doing so. When you call their primary phone number you get a message that basically says that they are too busy to even answer the phone and it's been that way for months now. A caller is simply directed to their "Frequently Asked Questions" section on their website, which has been no help whatsoever. There is also apparently no way to even send them an e-mail that they could deal with as their time permits. I even opened a personal IRS Account online hoping to get some information about the status of my previous tax returns and found it to be primarily for making payments to the IRS. However, you are supposed to be able to get transcripts of past forms submitted on this account. However, apparently mine don't even exist over the past 3 years, even though they cashed checks for over $14,000.00 dollars! In fact, my 2019 forms are marked as receiving a request for verification of non-filing.

At that point, I decided to try to contact the local IRS office and try to make an appointment with them to bring in the forms previously submitted and attempt to fix this problem. Anyway, it took 3 days of repeated calls to even get into the que and on hold for a representative. Once on hold, it took nearly a full hour to have my call answered by a live representative and she couldn't find the forms submitted either, but did acknowledge that they had cashed the checks. How can that be? After further discussion it was made clear that 2019 was a "Married Filing Jointly" return with my wife. Unfortunately, I was very sick that year and my wife took care of the income tax filing and put her name first on the form and me as her spouse. Apparently, they only file the submitted forms under the first name listed, so my account had no record of having filed taxes for that year whatsoever. I have to ask, why would they not cross reference this, as there are two taxpayers involved and it should come up in both accounts if someone is looking for it? Anyway, the tax representative was finally able to find the 2019 forms under my wife's name, however, they still have yet to be processed for over a full year now, yet they cashed the checks. Worst of all, this appears to explain why I have received none of the incentive checks as yet and according to this representative it may be a very long time until I do, simply because they are so busy.

Again, I realize that they have a daunting job to do, but it's been over a year now and they still haven't processed our 2019 tax returns. I find this really hard to accept, especially since they seem to want to base the processing of the incentive checks on those tax returns. I guess it's okay to cash our checks, but it's also okay for them to take as long as they want to process our forms. Geese, I've got a $4,000.00 refund due on my 2021 taxes and it may be next year before I can hope to see either my refund or any of the stimulus funds. Frankly, we're not starving, but we could sure use those funds in the near future to pay other bills and stay solvent in this time of crisis! In my personal opinion, this is just another fine example of "Big Government" not working! Meanwhile, we are at their mercy and the local IRS office won't even make an appointment to try to clear this whole thing up and instead just told me that we would have to wait for as long as it takes without any estimate as to how long that might actually be! Is there anyone else out there having similar issues or maybe feels like my expectations are too high in this situation? Is it fair to hold my funds as long as they want when they would seize and/or freeze my accounts if they didn't get their payments in a timely manner? Anyway, everyone out there not getting their stimulus checks and filed a joint return might now have a good idea why.

My last year’s stimulus “checks” were hosed, but was able to take credit for it in 2020 tax filing.

Still no 2021 stimulus and their web site rejects me.

Fortunately I don’t need the money. It might ignite a GAS attack.

You are wasting your time trying to deal directly with the IRS.. Public relations are not their forte. You already have paid assistants in D.C., they are called representatives. By calling their office you can receive much better results. I used my elected reps to assist in problems with govt. agencies on several occasions, they succeeded in resolving my issues. Govt. agencies generally work for the executive branch and do NOT want contact with v**ers of any party. Members of the House and Senate command much more influence than an individual, it is their job to represent you. Agency staffers have no idea how to correct every mistake their agency makes, and they don't get paid to do it.
