I am attempting to update my originally Nikon refurbd D500. I have had no issues in the past. I am following all of the guidelines. The odd thing is that when I place the formatted card in the camera with the bin file in the root, Update does not appear on the screen. I have tried several times. I’m confident in my procedure as my Z50 and FTZ updated flawlessly.

Has anyone experienced this and if so how did you resolve it?

Do you now have to navigate to the Select Firmware version in the SETUP MENU and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the firmware update?

Which card are you using? It has to be the card that is designated as the primary card.

UNDOCUMENTED OBSTACLE....

I'd term it a feature but it's not. The SD slot must be designated as primary to update the firmware from the SD slot.

It helps to read the instructions given by Nikon. I reread them each time I update because I often forget what steps I did the last time.

For what it's worth, you can change which card is primary with one quick change in the setup menu. Just don't forget to swap it back.

Indeed. No mention of this on the NIKON firmware update website page.

Thank you for sharing that. I've been meaning to get around to it on my D500. Your discovery will save me lots of frustration, and will probably avoid a divorce since my husband usually takes care of loading my firmware updates on my cameras.

Try putting the firmware file on both cards

Exactly why I won't update. What's it supposed to fix anyway.

The biggest change in 1.30 is the ability to use CFexpress type B cards.
Same form factor as XQD, but different in the interface somehow.

The expectation is that XQD will be limited production and CFexpress will be the standard going forward.

Or just put one card in the camera while doing the update.
