We got there just as the majority of the Wapiti pack was heading into this field with the bison. We counted 17 total, but could not get them all in one photo! I was told this is about 400 yards, maybe more. Download not too bad for a $900, RF 800mm lens and 1.4 extender so 1120mm and at least 60% of the photo is cropped out, hand held and below 0 later in the afternoon.
The pros and wolf watchers said the wolves will not try and take a healthy bison as there is too much risk of injury. The ones that you see approaching the bison are young ones feeling their oats and seeing what they can get away with! The alpha female and male are both older with her being in her teens which is fairly old for a wolf I'm told.
Not sure what I think of the last one, but both alpha male and female are there and it shows the bison.
Enjoy, I sure did!

Wow,... great series. Looks like you had a great time in the snow. No 5 and 8 are my favorites when downloaded and expanded to isolate just the single bison with the single wolf.

Thanks for sharing.

They did not have bison for supper! I don't think they even tried. We stayed till they all left back into the hills.

Wonderful series depicting the natural interaction of these animals. It would not do to be an ailing bison! Your photos are excellent with good exposure and detail. This must have been a great day.

Beautiful country. Years ago my wife & I did some horse camping north of Lake Vallecito in the weminuche (sp?) wilderness area. Really enjoyed it.
