Help with Canon R6 File Name Setting

I received my Canon R6 today and have been going through the menu options and the user manual. I’ve got a lot to learn, but I am totally stumped on one issue and I’m hoping someone can set me straight. I’m having a problem with the File Name setting. No matter what I select for the 4 characters, the underscore “_” is used for the first position of the file name when writing to the SD card. For example, I registered CR6_ for my File Name and when reading the SD card in my PC, all images are named _R6_nnnn. I’ve tried other names but “_” always shows up as the first character. And the manual specifically says that “_” can’t be used for the first character. Any ideas? I appreciate any help on what I’m doing wrong.

Dunno about the R6, but in my Canon, a leading underscore indicates the color space in use. IMG_#### indicates sRGB while _MG_#### indicates AdobeRGB.

The underscore is a standard convention by EOS cameras to identify files created in the Adobe RGB colorspace. Is that what you intended? If you're a RAW shooter, this is no colorspace value within the RAW even if the files are named this way. The first four characters can be customized, see page 707 of the User Manual. You can change back to the sRGB colorspace to remove the leading underscore.

htbrown and CHG_CANON - Thank you very much! That is exactly what was going on. Don't know how long it would have taken me to figure that out. I really appreciate your help.

I’m not concerned about how the camera names the files. My organizing starts with the folder and sub-folder names I use when I copy the files to my PC or to an external drive. For the folders I use the naming convention "yyyy mo descriptive text". I made add a "dd" if the day of the photos is important. I did this for our trip to the Utah canyons.

It is my understanding that is the way it works. Just know that the first character is going to be "_'.
