The reason there haven't been many birds in my yard lately.
I was watching the birds at my feeders waiting for something interesting to come by when the small flock of doves on the retaining wall blasted off in a panic and suddenly this Cooper's Hawk was sitting where they had been. The hawk looked around a bit, flew up to the railing of the playhouse over the old swing set and looked around some more. Then convinced that the menu was now empty it left.
Just about a minute later this young squirrel was in the exact spot the hawk had landed when it missed its strike. Eating the sunflower seeds and peanuts left around. I think I will call this one Din Din since that is what it will become one of these days if it isn't more careful.
The light was awful, a mix of deep shade and a few rays of sunlight creating great contrast on the hawk when it was on the wall and when on the playhouse it was in deep shade. The squirrel only had a ray of light on the dark tail so that wasn't too hard to handle.
And I made a big goof. I was shooting small birds at a feeder in the light and my SS was at 1/1600. Trying to get shots of the hawk before it could take off I forgot to change the SS.

If "Din Din" doesn't smarten up he may end up as "Hawk Chow".

Nice shots! The hawk looks sweet but if your prey it must be terrifying. Cute shot of Din Din, too.
