Great idea; I think I'll give it a try, with three minor changes:
1. I'll go for a slightly small smaller scale.
2. I'll try to hold the large dish in place with some Velcro.
3. I'll use #4 threaded rod, washers, nuts and some wing nuts to increase stability and strength. #4 rod is very light and the wing nuts will give me an opportunity to experiment with the distance of the front reflector from the flash.
Hmmmmm.
Foam bowl beauty dish? I am so going to try it!
What a great idea. Thanks for the link.
Brilliantly simple, will give it a go......!

And I thought it was going to make my camera more beautiful.
I didn't like the catch light in the eyes; it looks a little funky.

I've attached some stupid stuff to my flash looking for perfect lighting for free. Folks used to make fun of me until they started seeing the results.
Not sure if I'd go out in public with this beauty dish, though. But I will use it at home.
Funny thing. I only have the toothpicks. When I buy breakfast at work this morning, I'll snag an extra plate and sheet of foil.
Okay, unlike other projects I planned, I actually completed this one. Here is my first shot with the DIY beauty dish.
I think I may buy a real one this year.
hand held the flash to camera left. Notice the ring catch light.....
