Nikon D5100: Movie Mode

I just took some video with my D5100 and it turned out good when I view it on the camera. When I view it on the computer using Real Player or Vegas Movie Studio10.0 the video is jerky like it starts and stops throughout the film. Anything you can tell me about this? What do I need to do? I shot this in HD @ 1080 and 30fps

Could be your video card and low memory. Video on a computer takes a lot of guts.

Try shooting in 24fps mode. I yields smoother video much of the time.

I think you have hit the nail on the head. I was getting a "High CPU Usage" report from Norton when I was watching the video on the computer. I have a lot of memory but I am not sure of my video card. I'll look into that

Thanks Sarge

Your "buffer" could not keep up with your playback. More & faster RAM will allow continuous viewing.

Correcto-mundo. I just ordered a new laptop yesterday to replace this 6 yr old Gateway. It has an i7 processor, 750Gig 7200rpm Hard Drive, a 2gig graphics card and 8 gig of memory. A Sony Vaio model.

The 1080p video you get from this camera is best (and usually, in the end) viewed on a TV screen.
Try playing it back on your tv. I experienced the same thing with the same camera.

More computer power and memory. But with Sony Vegas you can adjust the preview quality, The lowest is Draft mode, this will allow the video to run smoothly, but the image quality sucks. Be sure you have nothing else running in order to maximize CPU and memory usage.

OK...I believe we have quickly narrowed my problem down to computer. I have a Intel(R)Core 2 CPU 6300@1.86 GHz 1.87GHz 3.49 GB of Ram in my home computer and that is the one giving me the erratic playback. My computer at the office is a newer one with Pentium(R) Dual Core CPU E5500@2.80GHz and 6.00 GB Installed Ram. The video plays properly on this machine. NOW!!! my question to you is this. Is the Home computer upgradeable or do I need a new computer with better CPU in it ?.
