I am using the Canon R6, memory cards Lexar 1667X, 128 GB, 250 MB/S. I use Apple Mac Book, download images to Seagate external hard drive. JPEG images download perfectly, but RAW images will not download. What can I do to get RAW images to download?

1. Is the camera saving RAW files?
2. What are you using to transfer them (download)?

"download images to Seagate external hard drive"

Can you describe your workflow? Camera connected with cord? Card reader? Software used?

Can you see the RAW files when you open the memory card? They have CR3 extension. They will download in exactly the same way as your JPEG files. I have several Mac computers - some have a card reader installed and for the new one I use a USB3 card reader. So far not an issue with any file downloads.

If you do not have the latest version of macOS Big Sur the computer may not be able to recognize the .CR3 file type.

A CR3 is just a file. Computers don’t hafta “recognize” it to download and store it. Opening it is a different story.

It's a Mac so perhaps it's picky?

Exactly. That is my point. Until I updated my OS the files weren’t picked up and opened by Preview even though they were in the folder.

You’re not downloading images. You’re downloading files. Assuming you can still download files from your old camera, or files from old cards, are you now doing something differently with your R6 ? If so, then go back to using the procedure that was working before.

I also have had issues with CR.3 files on my iMac and MacBook. I like to store my current images in a file on my desktop while working on them. For some odd reason if I have Photoshop open there are times when the files appear totally black. The files always open in Adobe Bridge or Canon’s own software. I have never found anyone who is able to solve this odd situation. So I would be most interested to know if a solution is found. My camera is the older original R.

Let's first make a clear distinction between **downloading** the **file** from your camera / memory card to your Mac and actually **viewing** the **image**.

To just download, your Mac does not have to know anything about the content of the file; it's just 1s and 0s being transferred from one storage media to another, so that should always work, unless one of the storage media is broken.
To view the image, you need a software that actually understands the file format and can display the image. Depending on the file format (Canon RAW - CR3 in your case) that might be an issue.

As others have pointed out, we need more information to be able to help:
- where exactly do you have your issue; with downloading or with viewing?
- what is your workflow for that and which applications are in play?
- which version of macOS are you using?

To copy, the pc does not have to "recognize" the file to copy it, only to view it. The computer also does not have to recognize the file to show it in the list of files, so if it is copying the file he sold see it in the directory.

Open Finder - drag and drop the files from the card to your hard drive. That is if you have raw files on the cards. If you need to open them, then make sure your photo editing software can read cr3 files. No mystery, no magic.

Some programs (editors, catalogers) look for .JPG, .JPEG files to transfer. Not all will look for a .CR3 (or .CR2), or ... . I copy with the Operating System, ie.Windows Explorer.
