Had no trouble signing up online (recently increased my limit, again no problem online). However I feel your pain if you were turned down. I have seen articles describing cases (of other credit cards and apartment rentals) where they mix up identities, etc. It is sometimes because, unbeknownst to you, someone may have used your identity and run up debt. Or just simple "stupidity" of mixing up people with the same name, etc. Most often these credit card companies use 3rd parties to "check" your creditworthiness. Just be glad it was a credit card that turned you down, some people have been denied apartment rentals because of problems with their "creditworthiness" that again were false.

I was not actually turned down, but I was unable to get one. The bank told me they were unable to identify me, and wanted me to take a photo of myself with a cell phone or a tablet. I don't have either of those. I do have a laptop with a camera, but they said that wouldn't do. I have an unusual last name, I have lived in the same place for about 30 years, and I have excellent credit. I have never been turned down for a credit card. I gave up on it, and I won't do business with B&H as long as they use a bank that is too incompetent to identify me.
