Deadly beauties

I bought a scrawny 6-foot tall Angel Trumpet last summer. It has sent up new growth all around and is now a gangly shrub that is not terribly appealing, but this week it has blossomed - it has redeemed itself with 78 8-inch snow-white flowers in various stages. In the tropics they must be pollinated by either bats or night-flying moths, since their sweet subtle perfume seems to be only present after nightfall. They do attract hummingbirds if those are around. This plant, of the genus Brugmansia, like its' cousin the datura, is one of the more toxic of all ornamental plants. It has been used as a hallucinogen, but can become lethal. In Belize, a folk tale is that children who are troubled can put a flower under their pillow at night and they will dream of the solution to their problems. I tried that one night - it only resulted in a flattened flower. No unusual dreams. Pillows in Belize may be much thinner than ours...

Great captures and rendering. My fave is #2. Maybe 2 flowers under the pillow would combat the Covid blues? Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful second shot. I had the purple Datura but it was difficult to photograph. These are much prettier!

Maybe a flattened flower IS the solution to your problems, in which case it's an easy one! The Sacred Datura grows wild around here and though I know of its hallucinogenic properties, I have curbed my curiosity. But I might try a flower under my pillow!
