This is something nobody seems to talk about. I believe it happens on all there Alpha models...anyway I have experienced it on the A6300, 6400, 7R3, &r4 and 9 II.

You are focused on a subject and you shift the focus to another area, then focus back on the subject and it won't focus...it stays locked on the last focus until you shift the focus to another area...then it will focus back on the original subject.

I had suspected it was due to a low contrast subject but it happened in bright sun with the A9 II. I could repeat it at will about 50% of the time. Tried all the focus and metering options and it didn't make much difference.

Sony users let me know if you have experienced the same and if there is a solution for it.

Nope. Not happening. 6500 x2, 7Sii x2, 7ii x2, 7iii (x1). Curious if anyone else has the ailment.

FWIW, limited batch of Sony lenses ...
FE: 28/2, and 24-70/4
E: 16/2.8, 20/2.8, and 18-105/4

Haven't come across this in 6500 shots on an a7c, just kit lenses, FE 28-60 f4.5-5.6 and FE 28-70 28-70 f3.5-5.6 OSS.

NO. It has never happened. I believe it is an operator error.
But, I will tell you this, I stop down a lot cause I shoot white birds in flight and when you stop down a lot in manual your viewfinder gets dark, and I have noticed that picking up the bird is hard. So I have assigned my AEL button so that it will turn off, it is in the custom menu, Live View Display, Setting effect ON/OFF. When it is off, my viewfinder is bright and focusing is faster.
As you know, there are over 6 focusing modes you can choose from, pick another focusing mode and see it that one works better. I like Zone, and I have never experienced your issue.

Had a focusing issue with my Sony a99ii using a Tamron 200 - 600 lens. When at 600mm the lens would not stay in focus. Regardless if it was set to AF or MF. Tamron could not figure out the problem so I returned the lens for full credit.

Well, we now know why nobody is talking about it.

Could there be some obscure setting you use that causes it?

All my other lenses work fine. Just happen to have a bad lens that is all. Tried another lens from Tamron and it worked fine. New defective lens. It is nice to try the product out before you decide to purchase it to make sure it is working 100% before you invest your money into it.

It sounds like you have lock on AF turned on. For the A7Riii go to menu 1- page 5- focus area and then the last setting is lock-on AF. Make sure that is off. There is also a center lock AF on page 6 you want off. I can highly recommend the Friedman books on each of these Sony’s, the menu is so complex I find myself going back periodically even after 2 years with this camera and 6 or so with earlier models.
