Second David's suggestion. I moved to Affinity Publisher for a newsletter after I lost access to a stand-alone copy of InDesign. AP does everything I need it to do. Some things are done the way I was used to doing them in ID; for what's not, it's usually easy to find out how to do them just by Googling. I've not used Microsoft Publisher for years (decades?), but after I switched to PageMaker (the first leg on my journey beyond Microsoft Publisher),MP seemed klutzy to use and feature-poor by comparison.

Affinity Publisher would be an excellent choice. One-time fee, free updates, learning curve (but once you start using the program, it doesn't take long), and, as David said, the ability to integrate with the other two Affinity programs if you want to take advantage of that.

If you are totally into/conversant with what you are using, there is almost certainly going to be a learning curve with anything else, maybe small or not. This will likely be especially true for things which may not be used everyday, but are still critical at times. Even new versions of same software often change menu locations of items which is a big pain if you use something all the time. I wrote manuscripts for peer reviewed publications on a daily basis, and menu changes in new versions of Word drove me crazy. New versions often had new features which I found useless, while someone moved menu items around for reasons beyond me.

At great example of potential problems. My post-doc and I bought two computers a few months apart. Same version? of Powerpoint came with them. Yet a presentation from mine opened in the preview window, but then her computer said it didn't exist when we tried to view it. We all learned to save presentations in an old compatibility mode before taking then to a meeting.

I have used Microsoft Publisher for years. I know almost all of it's idiosyncrasies and features. So, here's the problem. I refuse to use software that helps itself to you wallet once a year. When I began using M-Publisher, you bought it for life. However, that was many years and computers ago.

I am seeking recommendations for alternate publishing software that does not require total reprogramming of my frontal lobe and has the features of M-Publisher. I am guessing some of you have already been down this road.

If you have been using Publisher for years, do you have a copy of the stand alone program already on your computer, or on CD? I have a fully functional version of Publisher 2003 on my computer.

I publish books and calendars for the tourist market in Tasmania. I switched from InDesign to Affinity Publisher last year and I love it.

We share an affliction. From 1972 thru 1988, I owned a 38' schooner built in Nova Scotia by the Stevens family. I have owned three plastic boats but currently I minister over a 25' Lyman Sleeper.
