After a year of indecision between an 80d, 90d and 7dii I made a decision a couple weeks back. My next camera would be a 7dii. I ordered it on the 5th and it arrived on the 9th. I purchased it from KEH used. It was listed as "Likenew-". Other than it did not arrive in a showroom box with a strap I can't see why it was listed as " - ". It looks brand spanking new.

We are trying to wrap up a winter painting project before winter is officially over so I haven't spent much time with it other then going through it's menus and beginning to make it mine.

First impressions

Slightly heavier then my old t3i. But not so much so to be problematic. Actually just the opposite. It has a more real feel to it. Kind of like the difference between the feeling of my last flip phone vs my first smart phone.
It also has a much different sound when opening and closing the battery compartment qnd memory compartment.Just a more solid sound. The same applies to the "click" of inserting a memory card.
Naturally I took some test shots at nothing much from the couch. The shutter sound is also more solid sounding, and sound like a sewing machine at 10fps. It gonna take some getting used to to intentionally click off 3 shots only.

I walked out back last night at last light. I was shocked that at iso 8000 the camera still locked in on a Cardinel in the grass. It was almost to dark to tell it was a Cardinal with my eyes! I have not looked at the images on the pc due to painting but on the back of the camera the image looks better then I could have hoped.

My decision to do the 7dii .
So far I have yet to see much from the 90ds out there that seemed very impressive. By that I'm referring to the 32mp sensor. I don't see images that suggest the sensor is really anything special. Perhaps it is and I'm just not looking if the right places. I was also a bit worried that my 120-400 Sigma might not be good enough for what the 90d might capture. I have heard multiple times that it is more prone to record the slightest camera motion. With all my warm weather shooting from a boat I didn't need more of a moving challenge.
The 7dii has a fantastic AF system, That was very important to me plus it's potential 10 fps kept calling me
The 80d was on and off my list of possible buys several times. Actually towards the end of decisions the 80d was still in the running. The 7dii basically came to first place due to its faster frame rate, weather proofing and AF system.

As far as 20.2 mp vs 24 and 32. I follow a bird shooter, https://youtu.be/cpEK5H2Riwg, who has been working with a R6 and he is having great results with that 24mp sensor full frame. His crops are often as large as I crop on my aps-c sensor. Granted the R6 has a newer and better sensor but comparing crop to crop or finished image mp size I have come to decide 20.2 mp is probibly very adequate. So I'm not chasing new cameras with high mp sensors --- for now.
Of course all things are subject to change.

Congrats and enjoy!

I've had my 80D for a few years and have no desire to go to the 90D. I hear about a mirrorless APS-C with an R mount is in the works and that idea intrigues me, but I'm in no hurry. I'm not even sure what it would offer that I need.

Lots of good images out there with only 20mp. You d need to be on your game when shooting a High mp camera. The photos coming out of your t3 were/ are great if you ask me. I too like the feel of the larger camera in my hands. Enjoy your new camera & looking forward to seeing some more of your photos.

Bill,
You've only got 10 days to finish that project on time. Now we all know you want to 'play' with your new camera.
So, so as not to be distracted by the new camera, use it to take some pictures of the project you are working on.

Now, get back to work!!!

Congrats on the new camera.

Maybe you need a Canon EF 100-400 (ll) mm lens that is just over a year old and still has a year of drop/fall insurance left? If so I have one to sell :)

Yes, the sensor is getting quite dated now and was really nothing to brag about even when new...... the non-articulating back is another serious concern for most people today ...

Many of the early ones had AF problems - so if you have a mint one now, I would be suspicious and test the AF system throughly ! !

No, I do not HAVE one - but the guy I shoot with does - so I CAN speak from some experience.....

I think my next camera may be the Nikon Z50 with 500 PF.
