I mentioned a few days back that I just got the Tokina to possibly replace my long-time favorite travel lens from Nikon. We all know that 4mm of focal length don't really amount to a hill-o-beans beyond 200mm. But 4mm extra reach at the wide end makes a big difference.
First, the Tokina is a tad bigger/longer at rest than the Nikkor as we would expect. The major difference is in weight. The Nikkor G weighs 14.8oz where the Tokina weighs over 25oz. The difference is due to the Tokina being made of metal vs the Polycarbonate of the Nikon lens. Pop it onto my D850 and the combo weighs just a couple ozs less than the D850/28-300mm Nikkor combo. Hard on the neck after a couple hours.
Optically, the Tokina does a good job although there is obvious corner-darkening at 24mm. Cranked-out to 200mm the Tokina seems to be just a tad short of the reach of the Nikkor.
Hard to find a high-ground "vista" in Delaware but here are a few images to compare.
