I know this is something that has been asked a thousand times before. Sorry if I'm repeating the topic. I'm currently shooting with a Cannon 7D. Great camera no complaints. I'm wanting to move into a full frame format. I'm looking at either the EOS R5 mirrorless or the 5D mark IV. I value the advice I 've always received from UHH. So please give me your opinion.

I struggled with the same question. I have an 8 year old 5D3 that has been a workhorse. I think the 5D4 is a better version of that.
I bought a R5 a few months ago. It's a great camera - photos are super sharp, lots of pixels, and the AF is head and shoulders better than the 5D3 - and probably the 5D4. It's a little smaller and lighter which is nice. I notice a big image quality improvement. I've kept my 5D3 as a backup camera - but I'll probably never using it again.
I feel that I made the right choice. I bought the R5 with the 24-105 f4. Much better than the 24-105 on the 5D3. I bought an adapter to use with my other lenses - 70-200 and 100-400.

Same struggle, what justification do I have to go to the R5.

Sorry for the spelling error. I worked for the Department of Defense for 30 years. 6 deploys totaling 27 months in combat zones. I guess I'm just in a habbit of writing it that way. Thanks all for the advice. I guess I'm leaning towards the R5.

How is the quality using your existing lenses with the adapters?

Quality with existing lenses is great. I bought the adapter with the adjustment ring. ($200) I tried my 100-400 v2 with my 1.4X with no issues. I have not tried it with my 16 to 35 - but I'm guessing it will work fine.

It does make the lenses longer - so my 70-200 f2.8 is even bigger. But I'll wait to buy the $2,600 RF 70-200 f2.8. :)

Thanks for your service I am a Vietnam-2 tour-Vet, my brother a retired lifer (Medic) and my oldest son an Iraq vet, 6 years active as a combat engineer and now Reserve Civil Affairs with over 15 years total service time.

I am a retired teacher and I point out spelling errors by just typing an answer with the correct spelling. The only time I make a point of it is if it is another word that would cause confusion.
And the older I get the less I care what people think of my typing. I am here for fun, not to write a dissertation.
So on my casual typos - I have a resistant personality (ask a shrink, it is a thing) - I will sometimes deliberately make more especially on words where the spelling and grammar Nazis are likely to miss it anyway because they don't know as much as they think they do. As to that, I have seldom met anyone from a Kindergarten drop out to a Multi-PhD who knew as much as they thought they did.

So don't worry, as long as we can understand your meaning it is OK.

On your camera question, I have a 5DIV, 80D, 90D & 7DII and all are good and do the job as long as I do my part. The reviews of the R5 are great and especially when it comes to AF, down to f/11 and some testers claim f/22 in excellent light. The only reason I am not lusting after one is I do a lot of birds and like the reach of APS-C sensors. There is no such thing as "too much reach" with birds and seldom "enough reach". An R7 series that is a real replacement for the 7DII as a wildlife/bird/action camera would tempt me to do a bunch of trading even at the age of 75 when I probably should just be content with owning 4 very good cameras and about 1/2 of the lenses I really want.

The improvements of the DSLR 5DIV are significant vs the original EOS 7D, particularly the FF noise performance and the 30MP image files, offsetting much of the crop factor. You also have the large AF array available is you work with extended lenses at f/8. The mirrorless platform is superior. Either choice is a excellent and profound upgrade, especially the somewhat discounted price of the 5DIV. You know how a DSLR behaves. You might consider renting the R5 for a long weekend / week and experiment with a mirrorless body.

The R5 must be better. It's $3900 and the 5DmkIV is only $2500. But perhaps you should wait for the R1.

If you can easily afford it and you want it, why does one need to have more of a justification?
